CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents introductions that consist of research context, research focus, research objectives, the significance of study, and the definition of key term.

A.    Research Context
There are many students difficult to read a book. There are some factors that influence the students are not reading a book, such as they are busy with their hand phone, busy with their job, lazy and they have not much time for study. The same problem is like in Institute of Islamic State Pamekasan, the students do not have spirit to study and also to increase their ability in English, especially to read a book. Actually the keys from a success is reading a book, but in the reality reading a book is not easy, may be because the text is difficult to understand, or the language used is too difficult to understand.
The difficulties whose experienced by students, the lecturers also feel the impact, such as the lecturers feel that the student difficult to understand related about materials that the lecturers explains in the class. So there are some lecturers have strategy to make the students have desire to more diligent and excited to study. In this case, several lecturers which teach by using stimulation question strategy to make a students reads a book, the lecturer considers that using the strategy to create active learning in the class. Because the strategy makes the students enthusistic to read a book so that the students can be easy to understood about materials if they join lesson in the class.
There are many cases that can meet about students difficult to read a book and also many students can study with forcing or reinforcement from the teacher or the lecturer. This case happens especially in TBI C class at first semester in quantitative course. Many students that can study about material of linguistics because the lecturer forces and reinforces the students to make a resume by stimulation question strategy. And the result make the students afraid of not making the material resume, so that the strategy called success in the class because in the reality the students more active than before and also than another lesson maybe because the students have read about materials based on stimulation question that the lecturers give.
I was also one of the students TBI C class at first semester at the past time, the researcher also had experience about difficulties to read a book, the researcher is very lazy to read a book because the researcher feels difficult to understand about materials, and also the researcher has not time to read a book so that the researcher just join and enjoy the lesson in the class without nothing that the researcher reads. The researcher does not care about all of the materials in her department but there is strategy that makes a lecture becomes exciting every meeting, the strategy is stimulation question strategy that gives by the lecturer. The strategy makes her more diligent to read a book and also makes her become active in the class based the materials that the researcher reads before, if there is something that the researcher does not understand and it makes the researcher has opportunity to ask to the lecturer, and also makes her easy to understand about the materials taught if the lecturer explains during the class.
The reasearch has the same purpose that said about pre-questioning can make a students are also more active in the class. It means that pre-questioning is kind of question to helps the students‘ motivation in the process of reading the material easily. Pre-questioning involves presenting students with a set of written questions or having students generate their own questions on the topic of the reading passage. The purpose is to make the students aware of the language is used to convey meaning and recover meaning from a text. Pre-questioning functions to gets students to predict within a context area what the text will be about before studying the text.
Any previous researches which have similarity with this research by Siti Megawati on 2017 entitle The Use of Question and Answer Strategy on The Student Speaking Skill at The Seventh Grade of SMP Ma’arif 2 Pamekasan. The previous researched on question and answer strategy, where the teacher or the student asks and answer together orally during teaching learning process, whereas this research analyzes the students answer the question in the initiate of teaching learning process. In the other hand, the previous research is to measure how fluency and understand the students talk about the certain topic. While, this research to measure how know the students about the topic which is going to be learnt, it also to decide whether the students already read or study the materials before joining the class.
From the explanation above, the researcher interests to conduct a research entitle “The Implementation of Stimulation Question Strategy in The Introduction to Linguistic Class at TBI First Semester of IAIN Madura”.

B.     Research Focuses
Research problems are the educational issues, controversies, or concerns that guide the need for conducting a study.1 In the brief differents the follow, consider differences among these parts of research :
1.         A research topic is the broad subject matter adressed by the study. Maria, for example, seeks to study weapon possession by students in the schools.
2.         A research problem is a general educational issue, concern, controversy addressed in research the narrows the topic. The problem Maria addresses is the escalating violence in schools due, in part, to students possessing weapons.
3.         A purpose is the major intent or objective of the study used to address the problem. Maria might state the purpose of the study as follows: “The purpose of my study will be identify factors that influence the extent to which students carry weapons in high schools”.
4.          Research questions narrow the purpose into specific questions that the researcher would like answered or addressed in the study. Maria might ask, “Do peers influence students to carry weapons?”[1]

Once a research problem is selected, the researcher has consequently selected the opic of the research, the area of the research, sourcesto collect data from, technique of data collection, instrument to collect data, and the technique to analyze data.[2] So, based on the resarch focus, as follow:
a.    How does the lecturer of Introduction to Linguistic class implement the stimulating questions strategy at TBI First Semester of IAIN Madura?
b.    How is the students response on the implementation of stimulating question strategy in the class of Introduction to Linguistic class at TBI First Semester of IAIN Madura?

C.    Research Objectives
Creswell states that research objective is a statement of intend for study that declares specific goals that investigator plans to achieve in a study. Research objective is used to find out the solving problem of research.[3] Based on the research problems above, the researcher formulates the purposes the study below :
1.    To know the implemention of stimulation questions strategy in The Introduction to Linguistic Class at TBI First Semester of IAIN Madura.
2.    To investigate the students’ response to the implementation of stimulation question strategy in the introduction to linguistic class at TBI First Semester of IAIN Madura?

D.    Significances of Study
Significance of the study is a probability level that reflects the maximum risk you are willing to take that any observeed differences are due to chance.[4] This is the next important thing after research objective that can be reached, and the research focuses can be answered accurately. Commonly, there are two kinds of the significance of the research, those are:  a) Theoretically, and b) practically.[5] In this part, the researcher described about the implementation and the influence from a stimulation questions strategy. Theoretically is a significance of study as knowledge, and practically is significance of study to people or the researcher.
1.    Theoretically
Theoritically, it hopes to increase knowledge of teaching learning process of reading particularly reading comprehension could be succes and effective. The result of the study could be reference to the readers and everyone who wants to conduct a study. Appropriate with definition of research as john W. Creswell told on his book Educational research that, “Research is a process of a steps used to collect and analize information to increase our understanding of issues or topics”.[6]
2.    Practically
a.    For lecturer
Generally, the result of the study hopes could be valuable knowledge to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of reading strategy are used by the lecturer at IAIN Madura. The researcher hopes the study in teaching quantitative course can more understanding about the materials by using stimulation questions strategy. Especially the students can have a strategy to reading so can achieve about reading comprehension.

b.    For Students
The students can more understand about material and also make the student more diligent because there is forced from the lecturer. And the stimulation in the class as a assignment for students.
c.    For Researcher
The result of the study can be good experience and also add the researcher understood about the influences of stimulations question strategy for reading and also to know about the implementation of stimulation question strategy in teaching learning activities.

E.     Scope and Limitation
Scope is the range of thing that a subject organization. In the study, scope refers to parameters, which the researcher focuses seek to be resolved would be fit within certain parameters. Scope is needed to make it as clear as possible what would be studied and what factors are within the accepted range of the study. And limitation is a fact or contion that limits something. In the study, the scope in this study is the implementation of stimulation question strategy on introduction to linguistics learning and the limitation is limited to the C TBI class at the first semester.

F.     Definition of the Key Terms
Creswell suggest us to begin our research by narrowing our topic to a few key  terms using one or two word or short phrase.[7] Therefore, in order to avoid misunderstanding in terms used in the study, the researcher considers that it helps the readers .
The definition of key terms considered as follow:
1.    Stimulation is the way to help students do something.
2.    Stimulation question strategy is one of the strategy which used by lecturer in teaching learning activity by spreading comprehension question.
3.    Introduction to linguistic class is one of compulsory subject for TBI students at the first semester of IAIN Madura.
