Place
of Articulation
The vocal tract contains some discrete physical landmark which are
used primarily in producing and describing consonants. In describing place of
articulation is describing where in the vocal tract a sound is made.
Place of articulation is place that sound of speech can articulate
trough several combination from element of yesplace itself. That element such
as Lips, Nostril, Alveolar ridge, Nasal cavity, Hard palate, Velum (soft
palate), Oral cavity, Pharynx, Uvula, Epiglottis, Larynx, Glottis and Vocal
cord. The combination delivers term in every merger of it. That is Bilabial,
Labiodentals, Dental, Palatal, Alveolar, Post Alveolar, Velar, and Glottal.
1.
Bilabial:
if both of lips are closer together and bringing it, it can be made a bilabial
sounds, that is [p] put, [b] but, [m] mood, [w] wall, [ẉ] where.
2.
Labiodentals:
this sound can made with combination from the lower lips against the upper
front teeth. There are two labiodentals in English [f] fat [v] van.
3.
Dental:
Dental are made with the tip of the tongue between the front teeth. There are
two dental in English that is [Ɵ] thigh [δ] thy.
4.
Palatal:
if you let your finger glide back along the roof of mouth you will note that
the anterior portion is hard and posterior portion is soft. So the palatal
sound is if the tongue almost touch the roof of mouth: there are four of palatal
sound [j] yes
5.
Alveolar:
just behind your upper front teeth there is a small ridge called the alveolar
ridge. English makes seven sound with the tongue tip at or near this ridge like
[t] tab [d] dog [s] sip [z] zip [n] noose [l] loose and [r] red
6.
Post
alveolar: made in the area between the alveolar ridge and the hard palate.
Sound can that can made from that combination are [ʃ] as in shot or brash [ʒ]
vision [ʧ] church [ʤ] jam and badge
7.
Velar:
the soft of the roof of the mouth behind the hard palate is call the velum.
Sounds made with the tongue near the velum are said velar. [k] kill [g] gill
[ŋ] sing
8.
Glottal:
the space between the vocal cord is glottis. And just there are two sound can
made at the glottis that is, [h] history and [?] silent syllable
